Mike Neal was born on June 26, 1987 and grew up in Merrilville, Indiana. He graduated from Merrilville High School in 2005.

As a high school athlete, Mike Neal was involved in football and baseball. On the football field, he ended his senior season with 59 tackles, 24 of which were for loss, plus 12 sacks, 20 quarterback hurries, 6 pass breakups and 1 blocked kick. Previously, as a junior, Mike Neal made 49 tackles, 14 of which were for loss plus four sacks, 3 pass breakups and 1 fumble recovery. Due to these efforts, he was considered the 29th best defensive end in the U.S. and Rivals.com put him as the sixth best player in Indiana. He also earned first team all-state honors as senior.

Mike Neal headed off to Purdue in 2005 and did not play that fall. In 2006 he played as a reserve in 9 games. He recorded 9 tackles, 8 of which were solo, and 1 of which was for loss. Unfortunately, he missed five games due to injury.

In 2007, Mike Neal was back and healthy. He played in all 13 games and made 22 tackles, 3.5 of which were for loss plus 2 sacks, with one pass breakup. In 2008, Mike Neal made 11 starts while playing in 12 games. He made 33 tackles--18 solo, 15 assists.
