Joe Holland was born on Aug. 20, 1988 and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Bishop Chatard High school like teammate Frank Halliburton. In high school, Joe Holland played football, basketball, and track.

In football, Joe Holland was a 3 star player. He rushed for 2,048 yards on 239 carries (8.6 average) and 35 touchdowns during his senior year. This led him to be named all-state, Indianapolis City Player of the Year and All-North Football Player of the Year. He played in a wide variety of positions and even set the school record for career rushing yards with 5,270.

After not playing in 2007, Joe Holland started all 12 games as linebacker on the weakside. He ended the year with 76 tackles. His grades also garnered attention and he was named as an Academic All-Big Ten and Academic All-District V.
