Jaycen Taylor was born on Aug. 22, 1987 and grew up in Hawthorne, California. He attended Leuzinger High School and was named "all-area". This title came after Jaycen Taylor made 21 touchdowns and 2,104 yards rushing his senior year.

Next up was Los Angeles Harbor College. Jaycen Taylor was named an Honorable mention All-Western State Conference selection. In 2005 he garnered 1,034 all-purpose yards. Then he transferred to Purdue in 2006. On the football team he had the chance to play in all 14 games as reserve and on special teams. He was first on the team with a 6 yard rushing average.

In 2007 Jaycen Taylor earned 3 starts and played in 9 games. He rushed for 560 yards on 107 carries and was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. In 2008 he sat out with injury.
