Gabe Holmes was born on March 29, 1991 and grew up in Miramar, Florida.

At Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, Gabe Holmes was a three-time varsity letterwinner in basketball and a varsity football player for several years.

As a junior, Gabe Holmes had 11 catches for 80 yards. His team made it to state and captured the 5A title during that season. Despite a thigh injury during Gabe Holmes' senior year when he was forced to sit out for three games, he still came through with 18 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns. Again, his high school squad made it to state and again they won the 5A state championship.

Gabe Holmes was recognized as second team All-Broward County, a three-star prospect by and, and the latter company also ranked Gabe Holmes as the 27th top tight end in the U.S.

Gabe Holmes enrolled at Purdue in 2010 and started training with the Purdue Boilermakers football team.
